Methylene blue is a salt that is used in a traditional medicine setting to treat a condition called methemoglobinemia, which occurs when the blood cannot deliver oxygen to where it is needed in the body.

There is a long history of methylene blue use across multiple areas of medicine such as treatment of Malaria, depression and even schizophrenia. More recent research is looking at the role of methylene blue in the improvement of cognitive decline associated with neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s  Disease.

Studies have shown that methylene blue can improve cognitive function and memory in older adults. Methylene blue may work by increasing blood flow to the brain and promoting the growth of new neuronal connections.

Mitochondria are the "powerhouses" of cells, responsible for generating energy for the body. Methylene blue has been shown to improve mitochondrial function, which can have numerous health benefits.

Methylene blue can increase serotonin and reduce monoamine oxidase resulting in improved mood and memory function. It also is an antioxidant reducing free radicals allowing for prolonged cell life and improved function.

Some early research has suggested that methylene blue may be able to help fight certain types of cancer, including breast and prostate cancer. Methylene blue may work by inhibiting the growth of cancer cells and promoting apoptosis, or programmed cell death.
