- 82-year-old with scoliosis conquers Leaning Tower of Pisa after treatment at Healand Clinic
An 82-year-old lady with severe pain caused by scoliosis was able to climb to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy after medical treatments from Healand Clinic in Leicester. Carole Thompson, from Wigston, had been diagnosed with scoliosis several years ago and the condition had been worsening as she grew older. Her back had been getting so painful that she was having to stop and rest several times on the short, mile-long walk from her home in Little Hill to Wigston Town Centre. Despite taking over-the-counter painkillers, without a spinal operation, she was faced with limited options. Carole climbed to the top of the Leaning Tower of Piza after treatment for scoliosis at Healand Clinic With a trip to the Mediterranean approaching, she turned to Healand Clinic after learning about the innovative treatments on offer, to see if there was anything they could do to alleviate the pain, so that she could enjoy her holiday. After a free consultation with Medical Director, Dr Omar Babar MBChB, PG Cert, FRCEM, Carole was offered a course of Ozone infusions designed to control inflammation, relieve symptoms, slow down joint damage, and improve quality of life. Carole received four infusions which involved Dr Babar carefully injecting Ozone into the most painful areas of her spine . By the end of the course of treatment only a few weeks later, Carole’s pain had reduced dramatically and mobility had improved considerably. Carole said, “The difference the Ozone made to me was incredible. "Before, I was struggling to walk even into Wigston in one go. But after the treatment, I went on holiday last October with my daughter and I was able to move around with so much less pain in my back. “On the day we went to Pisa, we covered over 19,300 steps, equating to over eight miles! "And, I was actually able to climb the 294 stairs right up to the top of the tower. "I was so pleased that I did, as the views were incredible. "It would have been such a shame to go all that way and not have been able to get to the top. “The Ozone infusions made a massive difference to the pain I was experiencing in my back, so from my perspective it was definitely worth doing. "I certainly wouldn’t have been able to walk that far or go up to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa without having the treatment at Healand.” Dr Babar added, “For patients like Carole, depending on the personal circumstances, we can offer a number of different treatments – some of these aren’t readily available on the NHS – such as the Ozone infusions and PRP [Platelet Rich Plasma] injections. "We can also administer more mainstream treatments that are NHS accessible, but sometimes there are long waiting lists to access the medication. At Healand, we can provide a more immediate service. “We offer free consultations where we discuss the patient’s issues and decide on an individual pain management plan. Every person is different, so the treatments are all tailored to the individual. “We are a CQC registered clinic and we can offer a wide range of clinical care delivered by experienced, trusted professionals. We would be delighted to speak to anyone about how we can be a part of their transformative healthcare journey.”
- What Is Carboxytherapy & How Can It Boost Your Skin?
Whether you have heard of the term carboxytherapy or not, one thing is certain, it is a phenomenal aesthetic treatment that can do wonders for your skin. Naturally, the term carboxy refers to carbon dioxide (CO₂) as this progressive treatment uses it to give your skin a well-deserved boost. And as most of us are aware, we breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Therefore, some of us may be under the misconception that this gas is not at all valuable to us. If you are one of those, then you would be wrong. Simply because carbon dioxide is essential for life on Earth. We as humans need it to regulate our respiration and control our blood pH. Plants, of course, use carbon dioxide to create oxygen (photosynthesis). And we need oxygen to breathe. The circle of life. However, carbon dioxide is more than just a gas that keeps us alive. It also offers remarkable skin-enhancing results. So what is carboxytherapy and how can it boost your skin? Here is what you need to know. Carboxytherapy For Beginners Carboxytherapy, also known as carbon dioxide therapy, is a non-surgical procedure that involves the subcutaneous injection of carbon dioxide gas. It was originally developed in France in the 1930s. The timeline is more or less as follows. In 1932, patients bathed in carbonated water pools to help heal wounds caused by certain circulatory diseases. It was not until the 1950s when doctors first began injecting CO₂ into the fatty layer of the skin. The goal around this time was to use carboxytherapy to treat cellulite. Fast forward to 1995, Luigi Parassoni introduced the term carboxytherapy as we know it today at the Italian Society of Esthetical Medicine. And the rest is history as they say. However, carboxytherapy can be used to treat more than just lesions and cellulite. It is used to improve the appearance of stretch marks, stimulate hair growth, and to restore your skin. What’s more, this remarkable skin-rejuvenating treatment can also be used on your face, abdomen, arms, thighs, and even your buttocks! A Quick Look At The Inner Workings Of A Carboxy Injections How does carboxytherapy work? And how does injecting carbon dioxide affect our bodies? Great question. To vastly sum it up, when CO₂ is injected into your skin, it temporarily increases the carbon dioxide levels in your blood. This increase triggers several responses in your body. These include expanding blood vessels, improving oxygen flow, boosting collagen production, and enhancing lymphatic drainage. Here is a slightly more in-depth breakdown: CO₂ helps widen your blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the injected area. This increased blood flow brings more oxygen and nutrients to your tissues, supporting repair and rejuvenation for a brighter and healthier skin. The boost in oxygen also stimulates fibroblasts (cells that produce collagen), which keeps your skin firm and elastic. Carboxytherapy also aids in draining excess fluids and toxins, helping to reduce swelling and promote overall well-being. The best part? Carboxytherapy has been thoroughly researched. It is supported by extensive scientific research that proves its efficacy and safety. Common Carboxytherapy Uses Carboxytherapy is mostly used to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, stretch marks, dark circles and under-eye puffiness. It is also widely used to treat cellulite (a skin condition up to 90% of women who have gone through puberty experience). Other popular uses include scar treatment, to enhance blood flow to the scalp, which can stimulate hair growth and improve hair thickness. While it is not a weight-loss solution, it can target localised fat deposits, making it ideal for body contouring too. Risks To Keep In Mind Due to carboxytherapy’s non-surgical nature, risks are rare. But, as with any treatment, they do exist. Some people may experience mild discomfort during the procedure, or swelling and bruising at the injection site afterwards. These, however, are usually short-lived. Even though carboxytherapy is suitable for most, it is not suitable for pregnant women and those with certain medical conditions or skin infections. That is why booking a consultation before booking an appointment is worth more than all the gold in the world. It allows us to assess your skin and discuss your medical history to ensure carboxytherapy is the right treatment for you. Here Is What You Need To Remember About Carboxytherapy Carboxytherapy is a highly effective treatment for skin rejuvenation. A recent study found that about 80% of people saw visible improvements in cellulite after just eight sessions. Around 75 to 85% of patients also noticed better colour, texture, and depth of their stretch marks after several treatments. When it comes to skin firmness, about 70 to 90% of patients experienced improvements! These great results show just how powerful carbon dioxide can be in renewing your skin. If you are interested in trying it, feel free to book a consultation with one of our qualified aestheticians.
- Hormone Therapy: Do I have a testosterone deficiency?
Hi everyone, Felix here, Advanced clinical practitioner with Healand clinic. Today I'm going to talk to you about hypogonadism. Hypogonadism refers to a condition where the testicles are not producing enough hormones which can result in the decrease in levels of testosterone. There are different types of hypogonadism including primary, secondary, tertiary, and functional hypogonadism is often referred to interchangeably as testosterone deficiency. So firstly primary hypogonadism occurs when there's a problem with the testicles themselves such as genetic disorders, injury, or infection. This can lead to a decrease in testosterone production and potentially affect fertility. Secondary hypogonadism occurs when there's a problem with the pituitary gland and/or the hypothalamus in the brain which can affect the production of hormones that stimulate the testicles, namely Luteinising Hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). This type of hypogonadism can be caused by certain medications, tumours and even radiation therapy. So now we're on to tertiary hypogonadism - this is a little bit rarer and occurs when there's a problem with the hypothalamus which can affect the production of hormones that stimulate the protein gland and also other hormones such as prolactin. This can result in decreased production of hormones that stimulate the testicles. Now lastly we have functional hypogonadism which is a type of hypogonadism that occurs due to lifestyle factors such as obesity, stress, lack of exercise and steroid abuse. These factors can affect hormone production and lead to decreased levels of testosterone. Treatment for hypogonadism may include hormone replacement therapy, lifestyle changes and in some cases even surgery. If you're interested in any of our services including screening, blood tests, and treatments, book your free consultation with one of our clinicians to discuss your needs. Let Healand be part of your Healthcare journey.
- What Are Peptides And How Do They Work?
Have ever wondered what a peptide is? Then this article is for you! These tiny (yet very mighty) molecules have gained significant media attention in the past few years. Therefore, we are not at all surprised as to why you are curious. As the famous saying goes, "Dynamite comes in small packages." And this small package packs a powerful punch. In recent years, peptides have become the ultimate go-to ingredient. Especially for those looking to boost their appearance, beauty, health, and wellness. But just because peptides have been all over the news recently, it does not mean they were discovered yesterday. In fact, peptides have been used in medicine for about 100 years! Did you know that? They have played a notable role in medical practices since the advent of insulin therapy in the 1920s. With over 5.6 million people living with diabetes in the UK, and around 4.4 million people diagnosed with the condition, there is a fair chance you will know somebody who relies on insulin. And insulin is the OG of peptide treatments. By the 1990s, scientists had identified, studied, and created thousands more peptides. In 2000, 40 peptide drugs had been approved worldwide, and since then, over 33 more have been added to the list. This shows that the future of peptides looks promising and today we are going to learn why. Here Are Some Of The Basics To vastly sum it up, peptides are short chains of amino acids. They are linked together by chemical bonds known as peptide bonds. When these chains contain less than 50 amino acids, they are referred to as peptides. If they contain more than 50 amino acids, they are known as proteins. They are important because they play a huge role in almost every biological process in your body. Their main job is to carry messages throughout your body. Think of it this way. They act like head boy and head girl guiding your cells on what to do, whether it is to heal, grow, or to repair themselves faster. This makes them super versatile and absolutely invaluable in aesthetics, athletics, and medicine. How Peptides Work Within Peptide Therapy In peptide therapy, synthetic peptides are usually used. These human-made copies of the natural ones your body produces are designed to change or improve how certain parts of your body function. Just like the real deal. When these peptides are injected into your skin, muscles, or bloodstream, they help your cells repair themselves. Some peptides are designed to "tell" your body to produce more collagen. This is an essential protein responsible for keeping your skin young and plump. However, as we age, our body's ability to produce enough collagen decreases. Therefore, this newly found boost works wonders. Other peptides help your muscles recover faster. They can also help boost your immune system, energy production, and even assist in breaking down fat by speeding up your metabolism. Pretty incredible, right? Curious About The Most Popular Uses Of Peptide Therapy? Skincare Is A Big One Peptide therapy can directly affect the structure and appearance of your skin. It can help restore your youthful glow by stimulating an increase in collagen and elastin production. What is not to love about that? The peptide GHK-Cu, also known as Copper Tripeptide-1, is considered one of the most promising for anti-ageing. It helps improve skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles, boost collagen production, reduce inflammation, enhance skin hydration, and speed up healing after tissue damage. That is quite a mouthful but the results speak for themselves. Think of it this way. Peptide therapy is almost like a mini time machine being injected into your skin. Amazing. Medicine And Fitness Is All The Rage In medicine, peptides are used to treat everything from wound healing to autoimmune diseases. To quote Neil Armstrong, “It is one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind”. That is how we feel about peptide therapy. How incredibly far we have come as a species that we can use a minimally invasive treatment to promote tissue repair. Peptide therapy is also uber useful when it comes to chronic disease management. This is basically due to their ability to promote tissue regeneration, reduce inflammation, and enhance your overall immune function. In chronic conditions (e.g. diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and autoimmune disorders) peptides like thymosin beta-4 and BPC-157 have been shown to stimulate healing and accelerate recovery. When it comes to fitness (calling all athletes and bodybuilders out there) peptides are commonly used to accelerate muscle growth and recovery. In fact, athletes and bodybuilders are known to use peptides to enhance their performance and achieve faster results from their workouts. They are also used to improve fat loss and boost energy levels. The more you know, right? Weight Loss Is Major We need to irritate the above. Weight loss is major. Most of us have heard of the weight loss drug, Ozempic (Semaglutide) that has taken the world by storm. But few people realise that Ozempic is a peptide. It is biochemically very similar to a natural peptide found in the human gut. Peptides are also effective for weight loss due to their ability to influence multiple aspects of your metabolism. Peptides like CJC-1295 and AOD-9604 work by encouraging the body to use fat as a primary energy source, rather than relying on carbohydrates or muscle tissue. This shift in fuel source results in improved fat loss without sacrificing lean muscle mass, which is a common problem in so many weight loss programs. Here Is What You Need To Remember Peptides have transformed how doctors approach cellular regeneration. There really are no two ways around it. From boosting skin health to promoting muscle growth, improving brain function and enhancing overall vitality. Peptide therapy is the way to go. Look at it this way. Over 60 peptide drugs have been approved in the United States, Europe, and Japan and over 150 are in active clinical development until date. This clearly indicates that peptide therapy is on the up and up. We are also incredibly proud to mention that Healand Clinic is partnering with Koniver Wellness. Koniver Wellness is a leader in progressive therapies that has pioneered the use of peptides to achieve impressive clinical results. So please. Let us get real. Are you aiming to rejuvenate your skin, enhance athletic performance, or strengthen your immune system? Did you just answer yes? Then peptide therapy can help! Peptide therapy offers a versatile and effective way to improve your quality of life. It may also be the treatment for you. If you want to rejuvenate your sin then book your consultation today to find out how peptide therapy can benefit you. In the spirit of going full circle, please share your peptide therapy experience in the comments below.
- Why Your Skin Will Love The Healand Hydra
If you are in the market for a skin treatment that delivers intense hydration, a skin boost, and beautiful results, the Healand Hydra might be just what you need. Offered by Healand Clinic, this facial combines the power of plasma with a skin-boosting hydration gel to create Healand HydraGel, the key element of our Healand Hydra procedure. We are also the first clinic in the UK to offer this innovative treatment. So, what makes it so remarkable? Join us as we explore the science behind Healand Hydra and how it can leave your skin glowing. The Healand Hydra Treatment This non-invasive skin treatment is considered to be revolutionary, and with good reason. Firstly, it offers a more natural approach to fillers as it uses a substance produced by your body. This makes it highly biocompatible. Due to its autologous origin (the plasma is derived from your own blood) it minimises the risk of rejection, allergic reactions, or disease transmission. Since it is naturally compatible with human tissues, complications like inflammation and immune response are also considered rare, especially when compared to synthetic or foreign substances. And, it is this compatibility that makes it an excellent choice for delicate treatments in sensitive areas like the face. Secondly, your plasma is combined with a hydration gel consisting of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps keep your skin hydrated, plump, and elastic. As we age, our bodies produce less and less HA, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, a hollow appearance, and sagging skin. Therefore, an HA boost is always welcome. The discovery of hyaluronic acid’s potential in skincare dates back to the 1980s when scientists first understood its role in the skin's moisture retention, and that remains its ultimate claim to fame to this day. Hyaluronic acid is celebrated for its ability to retain moisture, leaving you with beautiful, youthful, healthy, "plump," and "dewy" skin. Since hyaluronic acid is also a biocompatible substance, it is well-tolerated by the body, reducing the risk of allergic reactions. Therefore, it is safe to say that the Healand Hydra is not only a revolutionary approach to skincare but also offers a more natural method of skin rejuvenation. Your plasma and the hyaluronic acid-rich hydration gel combination enhances your collagen production and cellular healing, improving your skin from within. Different Types Of Healand Hydra Facials We offer Healand HydraBoost and the Healand HydraFocus. Both treatments require a small amount of your blood to be drawn. This blood sample is then placed in a special machine called a centrifuge, which spins it quickly to separate its different parts. The heaviest part, the red blood cells, settles at the bottom, while the middle layer holds white blood cells and platelets. The top layer is plasma, a yellowish liquid full of water, proteins, and nutrients. Once separated and depending on what is needed, the plasma is carefully collected and used in treatments like PRP or PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin), or in this case, our progressive and highly sought-after Healand Hydra procedure. The Healand HydraBoost treatment is aimed at enhancing your overall skin health and vitality. It is typically applied all over the face and neck offering a collagen boost, advanced skin hydration, glowing and plump skin, and to help with hyperpigmentation and dark spots. The Healand HydraFocus treatment on the other hand specifically targets areas like the hollowing under the eyes and the folds around the mouth (laugh lines). It is applied deeper in targeted areas to add volume, and stimulates collagen production, reducing dark circles and minimising the appearance of fine lines and other common signs associated with skin ageing. Other Benefits Of Booking A Healand Hydra Treatment Beauty and skin-rejuvenating benefits aside, this treatment is minimally invasive. This means it requires no cuts, scalpels, anaesthesia, hospital stays, or prolonged recovery times. The most invasive part is the blood draw, which is a standard blood draw and takes mere minutes to perform. Once your treatment is completed, you can typically go back to work or return to your daily activities. Another benefit is that there is minimal risk of migration. This term refers to the unintended movement of injectable material from the original injection site to another area of your face, creating lumps, unevenness, or a "puffy" look. Last but not least, as everyone’s skin is different, the Healand Hydra treatment is customisable to match your unique needs. Ultimately The Healand Hydra treatment is a great option for those seeking a more natural treatment with hydration and anti-ageing benefits. From stimulating collagen production, boosting cellular healing, and providing intense hydration, this non-invasive treatment can help you effectively turn back the hands of time. If you would like to know more about the benefits this treatment offers or whether or not you are a suitable candidate, never hesitate to book a consultation with one of our skincare experts. We are here to help you achieve your aesthetics safely and successfully.
- PRP, The New Era Of Hair Revival
Hair loss is a deeply personal and often distressing experience, affecting both men and women across all ages. Over 50% of people will experience some form of hair loss during their lifetime. And in the UK, approximately 14.5 million people (that is about 6.5 million men and 8 million women) are affected by hair loss. It can be caused by genetics, hormonal changes, stress, or alopecia areata (an autoimmune condition causing patchy hair loss, affecting approximately 400,000 people across the country). Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss in men, with up to 85% (in the UK) and 50% (around the globe) of men experiencing it by the time they reach 50. Whereas up to 75% of women in the UK experience thinning or hair loss at some point in their lives and around 40% of women will experience visible hair loss by the age of 40 worldwide. And it can have profound psychological effects, impacting self-esteem and quality of life. Fortunately, modern medicine continues to offer solutions that are both innovative and minimally invasive. One of the most exciting developments in recent years is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy for hair restoration . Short for Platelet-Rich Plasma, PRP is a component of your blood that is rich in growth factors. These growth factors play a crucial role in healing and regeneration with up to 90% of patients with androgenic alopecia experiencing visible improvement in hair density and thickness after undergoing PRP treatments, according to multiple clinical studies. How Platelet-Rich Plasma Stimulates Hair Growth PRP is a natural, science-backed treatment that is created by taking a small sample of your blood, spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from other blood components, and then injecting this concentrated plasma directly into the scalp where hair thinning or loss is occurring. Due to your own blood being used, the risk of allergic reactions or immunological responses is virtually 0%. According to a 2020 systematic review published in the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery journal, serious adverse events were not reported in any of the reviewed studies using PRP for hair loss. Remember, your hair follicles, like any other tissue in the body, require nourishment and proper blood supply to function optimally. When they become weak or dormant, the special growth factors found in PRP therapy help improve blood flow (full of oxygen and nutrients) to your hair follicles and wake up the sleepy hair follicles by stimulating the stem cells in the area, encouraging them to get back to work and start growing hair again. Therefore, a series of PRP treatments (depending on your needs) can make your hair feel thicker and stronger by reinforcing the strands and reducing breakage over time. To give you an idea, on average, 3 to 4 sessions spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart are recommended initially, followed by maintenance every 4 to 6 months for optimal and longer-lasting results. Other PRP Benefits Beyond Hair Restoration One of the great things about PRP is that it is simple and safe. Infection is extremely rare (under 1%) when performed by a professional within clinical settings since it uses autologous material. No reports of scarring, tumour formation, or vascular complications in PRP hair therapy have been confirmed in published literature. Of course, unbeknownst to many, PRP not only helps grow new hair, but also makes your current hair healthier, stronger, and shinier! Another plus point is that Platelet-Rich Plasma injections are suitable for almost everyone. However, having said that, it is important to book a consultation with a qualified medical professional beforehand to confirm whether or not it is suitable for you. This is because this scalp restoration therapy may not be suitable if you are completely bald, have a lot of scarring on your scalp, have specific blood disorders or issues with how your platelets work, or have an active scalp infection. Similarly, if you are a smoker, it can slow down healing too. Our Last Few Words According to a RealSelf survey, PRP for hair loss holds an 84% "Worth It" rating based on user reviews. PRP therapy for hair restoration is also one of the fastest-growing uses of PRP. Simply because more and more people are looking for safe, natural, and non-surgical solutions to help regain the hair they once had. To put it into perspective, the global PRP market size was valued at £380.8 million in 2022 and is projected to reach £960 million by 2032. And as research moves forward, PRP treatments are getting better and better and even more refined. So, if you are starting to notice extra strands in your brush or your part getting wider, it might be time to talk to a trusted provider about Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy because sometimes, the best way to move forward is to get back to your roots.
- The Health Benefits Of Regular Blood Tests
Blood Test Regular screenings, whether for heart health, sexual health, or overall wellness, are of utmost importance as they help detect issues before they become serious problems. Early diagnosis gives you a better chance of benefiting from available treatments, allows you to prioritise your health needs, helps reduce anxiety about your symptoms, and maximises your time with family. Regular blood testing is no different. Blood tests are fundamental in modern medicine, providing healthcare professionals with a valuable opportunity to diagnose, monitor, and, in certain cases, prevent various health conditions. There are also various blood tests available to help pinpoint specific underlying conditions. Let’s explore why they are so crucial and examine some specific tests that can offer a comprehensive understanding of your health. Why Routine Blood Tests Are Key We have briefly covered the basics of why regular testing is important, but to truly grasp its life-changing potential, it is crucial to understand that regular blood tests can catch potential health issues before they escalate. Conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, and liver disorders can be detected early through routine blood work. Additionally, for those already managing chronic conditions like diabetes or high cholesterol, regular blood tests are essential for tracking disease progression and evaluating the effectiveness of treatment plans. This inevitably empowers you to prioritise what truly matters in your life, whether it is travelling, pursuing new goals, or making the decision to step away from work if it is causing you excessive stress. Types Of Blood Tests And Their Significance Understanding the different types of blood tests available can help you manage your health more effectively. Each test offers valuable insights on specific conditions, and by familiarising yourself with them, you will gain a deeper understanding of how they contribute to your overall well-being. 1. Full Blood Count (FBC) A Full Blood Count (FBC) test provides a comprehensive overview of your blood's cellular components: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. This test can reveal various abnormalities that might indicate conditions such as anaemia or infections, making it an important test to have done. 2. Blood Glucose Test/HbA1c Long gone are the days when only the elderly suffered from diabetes. In fact, about 537 million adults aged 20 to 79 are currently living with the disease. Therefore, having your blood sugar levels regularly tested is vital, and a Blood Glucose Test, or HbA1c test, helps you do just that. It measures the amount of glucose attached to haemoglobin in your red blood cells. Remember, consistently high levels of HbA1c indicate poor blood sugar control, which can lead to complications if not managed properly. 3. Cholesterol Blood Test/Lipid Panel This test assesses your cholesterol and triglyceride levels, crucial indicators of heart health, as elevated levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides can significantly raise your risk of coronary artery disease. 4. Liver Function Test Your liver is a crucial organ, so keeping it in optimal condition is essential. A Liver Function Test evaluates substances produced by the liver to assess its health. Abnormal levels can indicate liver damage or inflammation, potentially due to conditions like hepatitis or cirrhosis. If you have a family history of liver disease or are struggling with alcohol use disorder, be sure to prioritise regular liver function tests. 5. Kidney Function Test Similar to a liver function test, a kidney function test assesses how effectively your kidneys are filtering waste products from your blood. Key indicators include creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels. 6. Iron Blood Test Iron is crucial for the production of red blood cells and for transporting oxygen throughout your body. A deficiency can lead to anaemia, resulting in fatigue and weakness. You might be surprised to learn that iron deficiency anaemia affects over 1.2 billion individuals worldwide, and iron deficiency without anaemia is even more common. If you want to monitor your iron levels, an Iron Blood Test can help. 7. PSA Test If you experience symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty urinating, or pelvic pain, or if you are 50 years old or older, a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test is highly recommended. This test measures the levels of PSA in the blood, which can be elevated in conditions such as prostate cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). 8. Fertility Tests Fertility tests offer valuable insights into your reproductive health by evaluating hormone levels, especially if you are having trouble conceiving. They help assess ovarian reserve, monitor the regularity of your menstrual cycle, and gauge overall fertility. For men, these tests can also identify any hormone imbalances that might be impacting fertility. Understanding these factors allows us to work together to support your reproductive well-being and address any concerns with a compassionate and thoughtful approach. 9. HIV Screening Blood Test With approximately 40 million people living with HIV worldwide, timely screening is essential for early detection and effective management of the virus. Early diagnosis enables prompt treatment, which not only enhances quality of life but also helps reduce the risk of spreading HIV to others. 10. Gut Health Blood Test/Organic Acid Test (OAT) Last but not least, the Gut Health Blood Test, or Organic Acid Test (OAT), provides crucial insights into metabolic disorders, nutrient deficiencies, and how gut microbiota affects your overall well-being. When your body struggles to absorb essential nutrients, it can lead to various health challenges. In Closing At our clinic, we highlight the crucial role of regular blood testing in proactive health management. These tests are key to detecting potential health issues early, enabling timely intervention and effective treatment, allowing us to fine-tune treatments and lifestyle recommendations to better suit your needs. Regular testing also offers peace of mind and helps track your progress toward health goals, whether you are managing a chronic condition or enhancing your overall wellness. Take charge of your health today, schedule your blood test with us for a comprehensive view of your well-being and expert guidance every step of the way.
- Microdosing GLP-1: A Patient-Led Approach
At Healand Clinic, we are no strangers to using advanced treatments, whether in aesthetics or health, to help our patients thrive. Therefore, when it comes to weight management, why would it be any different? More often than not, one of our patients' biggest requests is how to manage their weight, lose weight, or contour their silhouette. And that should come as no surprise, as around 29% of UK adults were living with obesity in 2022. That equates to roughly 15.5 million people. And since each of us has a unique set of DNA, eats a unique diet, and lives a unique life, making no two of us the same, we believe that weight management should be personal, sustainable, and clinically guided. With the emergence of GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, we now have highly effective, evidence-based therapies that support appetite regulation, improve metabolic health, and promote weight loss. However, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, we champion microdosing and dynamic dosing strategies that put our patients in control. What Are GLP-1 Agonists? At first glance, the letters GLP-1 may seem foreign, but truly understanding what this peptide is all about can make all the world’s difference. GLP-1, short for glucagon-like peptide-1, is a naturally occurring hormone that helps regulate your blood sugar and appetite. This already suggests that it plays a vital role and has a significant impact on weight and weight maintenance. The GLP-1 agonists we use at our clinic mimic this hormone. They are designed to help you feel fuller for longer, reduce cravings, and support better eating habits. Originally used to treat type 2 diabetes, these medicines are now approved and widely used to help with weight loss and managing obesity. Common GLP-1 agonists include: Semaglutide (e.g. Ozempic, Wegovy). Tirzepatide (e.g., Mounjaro) is a dual-action therapy that targets both the GLP-1 and GIP pathways. Why Microdose? Traditional treatment plans tend to increase the dose quickly, which can cause unpleasant side effects like nausea, bloating, or tiredness. None of which sounds like a weight management journey anyone wants to be part of. Therefore, microdosing takes a gentler approach. After all, sometimes less is more. Microdosing involves starting with minimal doses and slowly increasing them over time. And at Healand, we combine microdosing with dynamic dosing. This approach enables us to adjust doses based on your individual response, tolerance, and clinical goals. This method ensures: Minimised side effects Greater patient autonomy Improved comfort and adherence Customisable progress at your pace A Personalised Approach At Healand We focus on personalised care because we know that no two humans are alike. That is why, before beginning any treatment, we take time to understand your health and lifestyle in detail. One of our experienced medical team members, specialising in GLP-1 treatments and metabolic health, will also support you every step of the way to ensure you are never unsure of what to expect. Your treatment plan will include: A tailored dynamic dosing schedule based on your needs Ongoing clinical oversight to monitor progress and make real-time adjustments Support with nutrition, activity, and emotional well-being Education to empower long-term lifestyle change We do not see GLP-1 therapy as a quick fix, but rather as a supportive tool in your broader health transformation. Who Might Benefit? GLP-1 microdosing may be suitable for those who: Are seeking a gentle, side-effect-conscious start to therapy Have struggled with weight loss due to appetite dysregulation Prefer a personalised, step-by-step approach rather than rigid protocols Want to improve long-term health outcomes in a medically supported setting Why Healand? We do not believe in taking shortcuts, ever. Our focus is clinical excellence, safety, and personalised care. - How To Supercharge Your Immune System This Winter
Here’s a quick fact, our immune system works hard around the clock. No matter the day, week, or season because it needs to protect our bodies from harmful substances. Therefore, it constantly has to be on guard, especially during winter! It is no secret that colder months are synonymous with an increase in colds, flu, respiratory infections and tissue purchases. But why is that? Simple answer, a compromised immune system. As soon as the thermal reading on our thermometer starts to drop, it can wreak havoc on our defense system. Naturally, the exact reasons that affect our body’s ability to fight off infections vary. The top three culprits usually include our nasal anatomy, a vitamin deficiency/deficiencies, and lack of sleep. This is because lower temperatures make it harder for our nasal passages to work properly. This happens as less blood flows to our nose, slowing down our mucus production, thus affecting our immune cells (and system). And with less sunlight making the rounds during the chilly season, your vitamin D levels experience a drastic decline too. So let us have a quick look at what you can do to help give your body a boost in order to keep the flu, colds, and coughs at bay. How To Strengthen Your Body's Defence System Keep Your Nasal Canal Moist We are all aware that indoor heating can seriously dry out the air in our homes and offices. In order to keep the inside of your nose moist, stay hydrated and do yourself a favour and invest in a humidifier. It can make all the difference in the world. Of course, wearing a scarf over your nose when heading outdoors can trap moisture and warmth “inside” preventing you from breathing in the cold dry air outside. Vitamin D Probably one of the most important nutrients your body needs to boost its natural defences. Vitamin D (colourfully known as the sunshine vitamin) helps regulate your immune system and boosts the pathogen-fighting power of your immune cells. Therefore, you need to make sure you are getting enough vitamin D to help your body fight off infections and support your overall health (and well-being). Vitamin D deficiency symptoms commonly include bone pain, muscle weakness and fatigue. Vitamin C Vitamin C is without a doubt the vitamin most of us grab off the pharmacy shelves when we start to feel an oncoming itch in our throats (and with good reason). Vitamin C helps boost your immune system by encouraging the production of white blood cells and repairing tissues, making it easier for your body to fight infections. Getting a daily dose of vitamin C can also shorten the duration and intensity of common colds, making it a great go-to when you are feeling a bit under the weather. Vitamin C go-to foods include oranges, bell peppers, and broccoli. Zinc Another immune system sidekick your body cannot go without is zinc. Simply because this essential mineral is critical for your overall immune cell development. It also helps reduce inflammation and supports the healing process, making it essential for keeping your immune system strong and ready to respond. Wondering what food to add to your shopping list? Meat, fish, nuts, seeds, and eggs are typically high in zinc. Probiotics Modern research has taught us that your gut is key to keeping your immune system strong. That is why eating probiotic-rich foods like yoghurt, kefir, and fermented veggies (e.g. German sauerkraut or Korean kimchi) goes a super long way in boosting your immune defence. Remember, a balanced gut microbiome not only strengthens your immunity but it also regulates inflammation, further enhancing your body's ability to fight off infections. Sleep Saying that sleep is important for your body would be the understatement of the century. Your body needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep to function at its best! This is because your body produces cytokines to target infections and inflammation while you sleep. It also creates T-cells, which are white blood cells that help fight infections. Sleep also allows your immune system to remember past invaders, making it easier to fight them off if they return and tackle them head-on. A Super Easy Way To Fuel Your Immune System At Healand, we believe in the power of our wellness boosters. It usually consists of IV drips (intravenous therapy) and vitamin D injections, as these methods deliver high concentrations of vitamins and minerals straight into your bloodstream, ensuring fast and efficient absorption. Plus, it is a super convenient and fast way to give your immune system the boost it needs, all while fitting seamlessly into even the busiest of schedules. Our IV drips not only give your immune system the tools it needs to get through wintertime but they are also a great pick-me-up when you are feeling run down. They leave your body revitalised, energised and ready to take on anything that comes your way. Conclusion And Next Steps Your immune system matters. It defends your body against disease-causing microorganisms to keep you happy, healthy, surviving and thriving. Of course, ensuring your immune system is at its best is a 365 days-a-year kind of job. So be sure to prioritise your well-being by getting enough rest, eating a well-balanced diet, and booking an appointment with us if you are interested in getting an immune system booster . After all, prevention is better than cure, vitamin D injection benefits are endless, and we can all agree that being sick is not only costly but it is no fun at all!
- The Multiple Benefits Wrinkle Treatments Offer
When people hear the word wrinkle therapy, what do they think of? More often than not, they immediately think of an injectable treatment that combats fine lines and wrinkles. Chances are, you thought of the same. And yes, even though Botox is a well-known and incredibly popular anti-ageing solution, it is so much more than that. Dating back to the late 1800s when Belgian microbiologist and bacteriology professor at the University of Ghent, Emile van Ermengem discovered the bacteria that produces Botox (botulinum toxin), it has been improved, FDA approved, and used in various medical and aesthetic treatments worldwide for decades! According to the latest statistics, about 1% of the world's population have received Botox injections in their lifetime. That is approximately 7,312,616 documented procedures in 2021, 9,221,419 Botox procedures in 2022, with an estimated 900,000 Botox injections carried out in the UK each year. Let us have a look at exactly where Botox started and why this injectable treatment has gone from strength to strength with each passing year. Botox Through The Ages Botox is made from a toxin that the bacterium Clostridium botulinum produces. It is that very same toxin that can lead to food poisoning if ingested. In fact, that is how Botox was discovered. In 1897, a group of Belgian musicians became ill from eating tainted ham at a funeral, and that is when Emile van Ermengem decided to isolate the neurotoxin responsible for the illness and named it bacillus botulinum. In the 1970s, scientists began using Botox to treat strabismus (crossed eyes). They noticed that subjects treated with Botox for this condition developed fewer wrinkles in the glabella (the area of skin between the eyebrows and above the nose). One thing led to another, and fast forward to 2002, the FDA approved Botox for aesthetic use in the glabellar region. As the famous saying goes, the rest is history, as Botox is the only neurotoxin with FDA approval for various aesthetic applications today. As the famous saying goes, "the rest is history." Today, Botox is the only neurotoxin with FDA approval for various aesthetic applications and is used by plastic surgeons, doctors, dermatologists, and ophthalmologists to treat a range of conditions. How Botox Works It is rather simple. Botox works by temporarily relaxing (or paralysing) the muscles in the areas where it is injected. When injected in small doses, it blocks the signals from the nerves to the muscles that cause the muscle to contract. This, of course, then limits the movement of the muscles, and thus smooths out the wrinkles on the skin's surface above them. Various Uses Of Botox Medically, Botox is very effective for the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and often provides immense relief for people suffering from the condition. Other medical uses include slimming the jawline and alleviating symptoms related to teeth grinding (Bruxism). This is especially useful and important, as Bruxism can lead to chronic headaches and long-term dental complications, making early intervention essential for overall health and comfort. Aesthetically, Botox is widely recognised for its ability to address a variety of facial concerns. It can smooth out bunny lines on the nose, reduce the appearance of a gummy smile, provide a subtle brow lift, soften smoker’s lines around the mouth, and smooth chin dimples, contributing to a more refined and youthful look. These diverse applications highlight the versatility of Botox in both medical and aesthetic treatments, making it a popular choice for many. Clostridium Botulinum Is Dangerous, But Is Botox Safe? Botox injections are considered safe, especially when performed by one of our skilled practitioners . In regards to side effects, they typically include mild bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection site. We also apply a topical anaesthetic before we begin the procedure, making the process relatively pain-free. Additionally, the needle we use for our Botox injections is very fine, which helps minimise discomfort even more. The effects of Botox tend to last between 3 and 6 months, although the duration can vary based on individual factors such as your metabolism, lifestyle, and the area treated. If you want to maintain optimal results, we recommend getting regular maintenance treatments. The Final Injection Botox is extremely versatile, and minimally invasive, with almost zero downtime, and the effects are long-lasting. Whether you are struggling with excessive sweating or unwanted wrinkles, Botox might just be your saving grace. At Healand Clinic, your safety is paramount. We are CQC and Safe Face accredited. Every Botox treatment begins with a consultation, allowing you to address any questions or concerns before your treatment starts. Your satisfaction is of utmost importance. - The Impact of Low Testosterone & the Road to Recovery
Understanding Low Testosterone: More Than Just a Number Of all the complex hormones that drive our bodies, testosterone often takes the lead role for men. It's not just about masculinity; testosterone is a key pillar of our overall health and vitality. Traditionally, we associate testosterone with strength, energy, and masculinity. However, its influence extends far beyond these areas, weaving into the very fabric of a man's psychological and physical well-being. "Testosterone's role in the male body is vital. When levels drop, it's not just a physical issue; it affects every part of a man's life," explains Dr. Omar Babar, the medical director of Healand Clinic. "Low testosterone can lead to a cascading effect of health issues, from reduced muscle mass to a significant impact on mood and mental function." As men age, it's common to experience a gradual decline in testosterone levels. This isn't merely an inevitable slide into old age; it's a significant change that can profoundly affect quality of life. While it's natural for testosterone levels to decrease with age, the drop can sometimes be sharp and symptomatic, moving into the territory of what health professionals term 'low testosterone'. Recognising the Signs: When Testosterone Levels Drop Identifying low testosterone can be tricky, as its symptoms often masquerade as other conditions or are mistakenly written off as 'just getting older'. However, understanding these signs is crucial in taking the first step towards addressing the issue: Emotional & Mental Health: Mood swings, unexplained bouts of depression, and a general sense of malaise can all point to hormonal imbalances. A man might find himself feeling unusually anxious, lacking his usual zest for life, or struggling with a sense of lost identity. Physical Health Challenges: It's not just about losing muscle mass or a bit of weight gain around the middle. Low testosterone can lead to increased body fat, reduced bone density, and an overall sense of fatigue that no amount of sleep seems to cure. Cognitive Difficulties: Have you ever walked into a room and forgotten why? 'Brain fog', a decrease in focus, and memory issues aren't just signs of a busy life; they could also indicate low testosterone levels. Sexual Health Concerns: Perhaps the most well-known symptom is a decline in libido. Erectile dysfunction, a reduction in sperm count, and a general disinterest in sexual activity can all stem from low testosterone levels. Shabnum Ahmed, the resident counsellor, psychotherapist and clinical supervisor at Healand, remarks, "The psychological impact of low testosterone is profound. Many men experience a sense of loss, not only of physical strength but of mental clarity and emotional stability. It's essential to notice and address these symptoms as part of a holistic approach to treatment." The Ripple Effect: Beyond Individual Symptoms The impact of low testosterone extends well beyond the individual symptoms as well, affecting a man's life in profound and multi-faceted ways. In the sphere of personal relationships, the repercussions can often be deeply felt. Mood swings, diminished libido, and a general emotional disconnect stemming from hormonal imbalances can strain intimate and familial relationships. Partners and loved ones may feel isolated and distanced, leading to a breakdown in communication and emotional intimacy. Professionally, the effects are equally significant. Cognitive challenges such as reduced concentration, memory lapses, and 'brain fog' can hamper job performance, leading to missed deadlines and decreased productivity. A lack of motivation, another symptom of low testosterone, can dampen a man's drive and ambition, affecting career progression and overall job satisfaction. This decline in professional efficacy not only increases stress but can also further exacerbate the symptoms of low testosterone. These personal and professional dynamics shifts can contribute to a broader existential impact, leading to a profound change in a man’s sense of self and overall life satisfaction. The alteration in self-perception and identity can be particularly challenging, as it affects how men view their roles and capabilities in every aspect of life. Recognising the extensive reach of low testosterone is vital in understanding its full impact and underscores the importance of seeking comprehensive treatment.
